|||Thirty eThekwini metro police officers are being probed for helping trainee policemen obtain fraudulent driver’s licences, an official said on Wednesday.
They were implicated in a forensic investigation into the eThekwini municipality, transport spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said.
He said the 30 officers referred trainees to an illegal driving school where they could buy driver's licences without having to pass a driving test.
Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said the buying of licences contributed to fatalities on the roads.
“If the allegations are proven to be true, tough action must be taken against the guilty officers,” Mchunu said.
He said it was also unacceptable for some metro police officers to be taxi owners as their actions were contravening government policies.
The investigation, commissioned by the provincial department of co-operative governance, found high levels of maladministration and corruption in the eThekwini municipality.
An auditing firm was appointed early last year to investigate allegations of fraud, corruption, and maladministration.
The probe was instituted after Auditor General Terence Nombembe said in his 2009/10 report that R532 million had been irregularly spent by the municipality. - Sapa
