Eleven men accused of murdering an elderly couple, who were suspected of killing their grandchild, appeared in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the men would be back in court on February 16. They remained in custody.

The men face two counts of murder and arson.

Fourteen people were arrested on January 12, 2012 for allegedly setting alight Elsa Dubazana, 60, and Rafael Dubazana, 66, in Lindelani, near Ntuzuma.

“Four of them were released after being questioned at the police station because of insufficient evidence against them,” Zwane said.

Another person was arrested in Lindelani on January 22.

Police found Elsa in her bedroom and Rafael lying in the road outside their home.

The Mercury reported that the couple was attacked on January 6

by a group of people who accused them of killing their 16-year-old granddaughter, Zakude Shozi, and burying her in their yard.

“Their granddaughter died at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital on January 04. She had overdosed on some pills because she was having family problems,” said Zwane.

He said police were awaiting the results of a post mortem as there were allegations that Shozi had been beaten by either her grandmother or her father. - Sapa
