A case of murder has been opened after a second body was discovered dumped on the grounds of another uMlazi school.
|||A second body was discovered dumped on the grounds of another uMlazi school just hours after residents and government officials celebrated the launch of the KZN Safe Schools Campaign at King Zwelithini Stadium.
SAPS spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said the body of a 30-year-old woman was found on the grounds of Isidingo Primary School in uMlazi J Section on Saturday night.
“The body had multiple stab wounds and the woman’s stomach had been cut open.
We don’t know what the motive was but a case of murder has been opened,” said Mdunge.
He said her family, who live in uMlazi H Section, had been notified of her death.
In March, the body of eight-year-old Mzwilili Primary School pupil Nonjabulo Sabelo was found in a bush near the school in uMlazi D Section.
The rape and murder of the Grade 3 pupil prompted the clearing of the bush surrounding the school, and the campaign aimed at creating a safe environment for the province’s school-going children.
Muzi Mahlambi, spokesman for the KZN Education Department, said this incident was “extremely disappointing”, particularly after so many people got together to fight “this kind of violence”.
“This is directly the opposite response to what the campaign is for,” said Mahlambi. “We need to stop these criminals from using school grounds as a dumping place for their criminal activities. They have no respect for our schools.”
He said community members had discovered the body.
“The woman’s intestines were outside her body,” said Mahlambi. “People have seen this, children could have seen this, and they will now talk. Children will know about this before they’re back at school. This disturbs these young children and some will be too scared to go to school.”
He said the children affected by the incident would receive trauma counselling.
Vukani Mbhele, spokesman for the provincial Department of Social Development, described the incident as disturbing. “Not only are women, children and elderly people abused, but the violence associated with the abuse is very worrying,” he said.
“This shows there is something wrong with our society and it is important that communities rise and deal with the problem. Communities also need to strengthen their street committees so that they are in control of their neighbourhoods and incidents of this nature are thus prevented.” - Daily News
