Bail for an alleged fraudster was reinstated by the Durban Regional Court on Thursday.
|||Bail for an alleged fraudster was reinstated by the Durban Regional Court on Thursday, January 12, 2012, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
“Vishay Panday's bail of R25,000 was reinstated with the same bail conditions,” Captain Thulani Zwane said.
He was arrested for allegedly defrauding a woman of about R500,000 in La Mercy, Durban on December 18.
“He breached his bail conditions after he allegedly assaulted a witness and left Durban without the investigating officer's permission,” Zwane said.
Panday allegedly posed as a doctor in 2009 and promised a woman a lucrative job with his company in the United States. He also allegedly persuaded her to invest her life savings of about R450,000 in his business, the Mercury newspaper reported at the time.
When the woman got no return on her investment she opened a case of fraud.
Magistrate Anita Govender granted Panday bail and imposed stringent conditions, including that he had to report to the Durban North police station three times a week, surrender his passport and not leave Durban.
The matter was postponed to February 10. - Sapa
