Romance, expectation and excitement took centre stage at the Durban Exhibition Centre NWJ Bridal Show on Sunday when The Mercury Bridal Couple of the Year was announced.

“I still cannot believe that we have won,” said radiant newlywed Lauren Paul, who kissed and hugged her husband, Radlyn.

“When they called out our names, I could not stop shaking. You always dream that you just might be the lucky ones – but wow, when your dreams come true, that’s quite something.

“ The prizes too are awesome. We have been so blessed.”

Lauren 26, who works as an administrative assistant at the SAPS, and Radlyn 25, a mechanical engineer, met while attending the same church in Newlands East.

“Lauren greeted me one day and I thought a woman that beautiful must have a boyfriend,” says Radlyn, who talked about how he wooed his wife-to-be in the early days of their courtship.

“When I found out she was single, I asked her out and, luckily for me, a few weeks later she officially became my girlfriend.”

Four years into their relationship, Radlyn decided that Lauren’s birthday would be the perfect day to make his all-important proposal.

“It was the best birthday ever,” said Lauren.

“A day at the spa, breakfast and then a champagne picnic at Botanic Gardens, where Radlyn asked me to marry him.”

After taking their vows at the Blessed Liberat Catholic Parish in Newlands West, the Pauls’ wedding guests were treated to a reception at the Grand Manor in Tongaat.

“It was the most romantic and happy day for both of us, and I know that all our family and friends felt the same way,” said Lauren, who put together her own vintage-themed wedding.

With the nuptials over, Lauren and Radlyn completed their fairy tale wedding by setting sail on a cruise to Mozambique.

The couple pocket a R5 000 voucher from NWJ Jewellers; a Krups Prep expert 8 000 food processor sponsored by Illovo; a luxury hamper; flowers; and a bottle of sparkling wine. - The Mercury
