A senior official in the supply chain management at the KwaZulu-Natal health department was granted R100 000 bail in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday.

“The state is not opposed to the accused receiving bail of R100 000,” said State advocate Musa Mzelemu.

Former deputy manager at the department of health, Sibusiso Nduli, was arrested on Wednesday for alleged fraud and corruption. He allegedly awarded contracts worth R18 million to companies that he was linked to.

Presiding magistrate Sthembile Maphumulo granted Nduli bail provided he adheres to the bail conditions provided by the State.

“The accused may not interfere with any of the witnesses or try to influence them,” Maphumulo said.

Nduli has to surrender his passport by Monday to the investigating officer Lieutenant-Colonel Petrus de Villiers. He also has to report to the Alexander police station in Pietermaritzburg once a week.

Among the allegations is that he used people including his domestic worker as fronts to conceal his involvement in four close corporations and to boost their black economic empowerment rating, giving them extra marks in the bid evaluations, the Mercury reported.

The paper reported that the Asset Forfeiture Unit pounced on Nduli on Wednesday, serving him with an order placing four vehicles and his Emily road home in Scottsville, Pietermaritzburg under restraint.

In his affidavit read in court Nduli pleaded not guilty. The matter has been postponed for January 25. – Sapa
