Four students arrested during violent protests at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Westville campus had been released on warning, police said on Thursday.

They appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, and the matter was postponed to March 30, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

Clive Buxeka, 20, Luthando Gangatha, 19, Msizi Mkhwanazi, 20, and Joshua Zimerman, 22, were arrested on Tuesday for malicious damage to property.

Students went on a rampage after they were told about a court interdict against the campus protests for more funding and student housing.

Three students were injured during the protests.

Lectures resumed on Thursday under a strong police and security presence.

University spokeswoman Nomonde Mbadi said R16.2 million had been made to financially needy and academically sound students.

This was in addition to about R229m received from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for 2012. – Sapa
