University of Zululand student Andiswa Hadebe is well on her way to becoming one of SA’s hottest new stars after being selected to take part in a local television comedy series.

The 20-year-old, who hails from a village in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal, will travel to Joburg next week for a workshop and casting session.

The fourth-year community and performing arts student’s road to fame began in November last year, when she represented the university at a workshop hosted by the Nkandla municipality.

She said the workshop featured actors from the sitcom Family Bonds and representatives of casting agency Zero to Hero.

The participants were told that those who performed well would be chosen to act in a television production.

“We were given five objects to make up a story from and then enact it, and we had to think of a situation that had brought us agony and focus on it,” she said.

Hadebe was told in December that she had been selected to go to the SABC offices in Joburg.

“I am willing to take a small or big part, either in a soapie or a drama series… I am very excited that this could be my big break,” she said.

Andiswa’s TV debut will follow her performances in two major university productions, Auction of the Century, which premiered at the Grahamstown Festival last year, and the musical Five Decades in an Hour.

Unizulu drama lecturer Gift Marovatsanga said Hadebe was a talented, committed and enthusiastic student.

“If she appears in a television production, it will speak volumes about what our department is capable of producing,” he said. - The Mercury
