A MOTORIST travelling at 202km/h in a 120km/h zone on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast has earned himself a court date – and a tongue-lashing from Transport Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu.
The 21-year-old man driving a BMW was caught by Road Traffic Inspectorate officers at Ifafa and taken to the Hibberdene police station, where officers released him on R3 000 bail.
He is expected to appear in the Hibberdene Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
Mchunu applauded the arrest and urged police to nab other transgressors.
“This is a total disregard of the laws of our roads and is tantamount to suicide,” Mchunu said. “It is however alarming that people continue to speed as we continue to lose many lives through road accidents caused by speeding.”
The MEC is expected to announce new plans and interventions to ensure compliance on the road when he delivers his budget speech tomorrow. Mchunu will reveal statistics relating to speeding offences, as well as the fines paid to government by road transgressors.
