|||Johannesburg - The deaths of eight school pupils in a bus crash in KwaZulu-Natal is disturbing, the ANC in the province said on Wednesday.
“The death[s] of young people, who are the future of this country, is disturbing,” the African National Congress said in a statement.
“We call on all drivers to drive carefully and make sure their vehicles are in good condition.”
Provincial transport department spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said eight pupils died, five were in a critical condition, and 20 sustained minor injuries when their bus overturned on the R66 between Ulundi and Kwaceza.
The accident happened on Tuesday night while the bus was transporting pupils from Richards Bay to Kwaceza.
Ncalane could not immediately provide the ages of the pupils. It was not clear whether the driver was injured.
“Investigations to establish the cause of the accident have started,” Ncalane said.
Transport, community safety, and liaison MEC Willies Mchunu would inspect the accident scene, and visit the survivors and their school.
The ANC sent its condolences to the relatives and friends of the eight pupils.
