Durban -

A housebreaking suspect died and his two accomplices were seriously injured when they crashed a stolen bakkie while being chased by police in Morningside early on Wednesday.

Officers from the Durban Central housebreaking team also responded to several reports of burglaries.

Police spokesman Khephu Ndlovu said the police were driving around the area stopping suspicious vehicles and conducting random searches when they became suspicious of a bakkie with three men

“Police drove towards the bakkie but, when they put their lights on, the suspects turned around and raced off.”

A chase ensued before the driver of the bakkie lost control and hit a wall, overturning the vehicle.

“One person died on the scene and the other two sustained serious injuries.”

Ndlovu said the bakkie had been stolen during the night. In the back were stolen household items.

“Police can confirm that the suspects had entered a Morningside home, opened the fridge and ate the food, before stealing several items, as well as the bakkie.”

Ndlovu said that the residents of the house were unharmed.

Police recovered a laptop, a generator, a welding compressor and a box of mechanical spanners.

“The two suspects were admitted to hospital under police guard and will be charged for housebreaking with intent to steal and theft.”
