Stunt fans can look forward to the revival of Sidewayz at the Market in Pietermaritzburg.
|||Motoring enthusiasts and race car fanatics can look forward to the resumption of “Sidewayz at the Market”, in Pietermaritzburg, a motor festival showcasing daring stunts and skillful driving.
The Msunduzi Racing Club has been granted permission by the municipality to hold the event every four to six weeks at the market in Mkondeni, on the outskirts of the city.
This was on condition that Motorsport SA, the regulatory body for the activity, sent a letter to the municipality indemnifying it against any accidents before the first event took place, Msunduzi’s municipal manager, Mxolisi Nkosi said on Monday.
He added that the club had submitted a letter from Motorsport SA, saying it had public liability insurance cover of R20 million.
“The event was born in the township and then became a legal motorsport.”
Club chairman Michael Chetty said the event, which drew people from across the province, had taken place for five years before ending two years ago when the loading bay platform roof at the market was damaged. The club had requested permission from the municipality in May 2012 to continue with the event, but this was only granted last week. The roof had been repaired and the venue was now considered safe. Chetty said there had been no accidents before, nor was there any danger to the public.
Chetty said the club was meeting on Tuesday to set a date for the first show, which would take place within six weeks. - The Mercury
