Durban - The University of Zululand obtained a court interdict on Wednesday barring students from disrupting lectures and damaging property.

Spokesperson Normah Zondo said the university had obtained the interdict in a bid to “maintain a conducive and safe learning environment on campus”.

The interdict would also operate against anyone supporting the actions and conduct of the respondents.

“The court order has been served to all concerned.”

The interdict follows the cancelling of lectures on Tuesday after protests erupted over changes to the syllabus for the four-year degree course, in which students train to be teachers at a Further Education and Training (FET) college.

The Daily News quoted university spokesperson Bhekani Dlamini as saying that students had “resorted to violence, boycotting of classes and caused substantial damage to university property”.

Zondo said lectures had resumed on Wednesday and that all was calm on the campus. - Sapa
