Police have dealt a major blow to the illegal underworld, with an estimated R1 million drug bust in Chatsworth, Durban.

According to police spokesman Jay Naicker, 3 120 straws of heroin, as well as 90 grams of pure heroin were found in a home in a residential part of Chatsworth on Tuesday evening.

“The drugs will be sent for forensics analysis as part of our investigation. No arrest were effected but once our investigations are completed we are confident that there will be arrests.”

Naicker said he could not reveal all information about the bust and investigation, as it could jeopardise court procedures and could possibly tip off suspects in the case.

In the statement issued by police, Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said she was ecstatic with the find.

“We promised our communities that we will have a zero tolerance approach when it comes to drugs and we are delivering on this promise.

“We will continue with such operations and we urge the community to stand up with police to fight the drug scourge,” she said.

Meanwhile Sam Pillay, founder of the Chatsworth Anti Drug Forum said the bust would be a turning point for the community of Chatsworth.

“We're excited about this particular bust, not just because of the quantity, but also because of whom the dealer is alleged to be.”

He said that a trend with arrests for drug-related crimes was increasingly showing police nabbing drug dealers and not just drug users.

This, was a positive step towards cleaning up the city, Pillay said.

“A million rand worth of drugs has a great negative impact on people. It's not just the addicts that are affected, but the community too. Addicts [are known to] support their habit by turning to crime.”

Pillay also used the opportunity to congratulate the Durban Flying Squad Narcotic Task Team for their bust on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile Naicker said that three firearms -- a rifle, shot gun and revolver -- were confiscated at the scene and would be sent for forensic analysis, as well. - IOL
