Durban - Police are continuing their investigations into the alleged kidnapping and hijacking of Durban man Leon van Rensburg.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Jay Naicker confirmed the probe, but said that the police would not be commenting further at this stage.

On Saturday, Van Rensburg posted a message on Facebook in which he detailed part of his version of events.

Van Rensburg wrote that, at the time of the hijacking, he had pulled up behind another vehicle at a stop street.

He “stupidly” had his window down, he explained, “and was surprised by a gun in the side of my head”.

According to Van Rensburg, there had been an armed man waiting for him at the side of the road and another armed man got out of the vehicle in front of him.

Family statements and police comments said the New Germany father of three was en route to a meeting last Tuesday, when he was hijacked and kidnapped in Hillcrest.

His vehicle was recovered in Kokstad the following day and on Thursday he turned up in Underberg, where, according to his brother-in-law Rob Gardner, he had been left.

“He made his way to a phone and contacted his former brother-in-law who lived in the area,” Gardner said.

Van Rensburg was greeted by anxious family members back in Durban. - The Mercury
