A gravely ill mother might not know that police are searching for her 10-year-old son off KZN’s south coast.
|||Police will continue searching for a 10-year-old boy, whom they believe drowned while swimming at a beach in Pennington on KZN's south coast on Monday.
Spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge said they believe the boy, who's name has been withheld from the media, disappeared underwater after getting into difficulty.
Mdunge said the child and a few other teenagers, were playing in the surf, when the boy went under and never re-emerged.
Said Mdunge: “We've held back the release of the child's name, owing to the family's request . “
It's believed the boy's mother is in serious ill-health and news of the incident could worsen her condition.
The boy and his family are believed to be local residents.
“We have not ruled out that a strong current could have pulled him under.” said Mdunge.
The police spokesman said an inquest docket had already been opened, although Tuesday’s search had not been re-classified as a recovery operation.
Paramedics who attended the scene said a dive search was called off on Monday afternoon, due to poor visibility. - IOL
